An electrical stimulus that directly stimulates your motor neurons, sometimes referred to as electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), or electromyostimulation, causes your muscles to contract. This is provided in the convenience of your own house by an EMS unit, such as a Powerdot, Compex, Tone-A-Matic, or MarcPro.
When muscles are stimulated, they can contract quickly and repeatedly, quickly but with considerable pauses, or for several (uncomfortable) seconds or even minutes at a time.
By sending electrical impulses from your brain through your central nervous system (CNS), your body normally fires your muscles. However, using an EMS device enables you to perform complete, deep, and powerful muscle contractions without actually activating (or straining) your central nervous system (CNS), much alone your joints and tendons.
The most amazing thing is that your body may contract either voluntarily or in response to electrical stimulation. Your body only detects a stimuli and responds to it appropriately.
There is research to support this, so don't worry if it seems a little far-fetched to you.
A study that was written up in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning investigated whether or not EMS may give top athletes a competitive advantage. As a result, they came to the conclusion that "the analysis shows that trained and elite athletes, despite their already high level of fitness, are able to significantly enhance their level of strength to the same extent as is possible with untrained subjects."
The researchers concluded their investigation by saying that "EMS offers a promising alternative to traditional strength training for enhancing the strength parameters and motor abilities in athletes."
In this study, a group of participants underwent high-frequency current therapy for 30 minutes using a number of electrodes positioned on their tummies. For six weeks, the participants participated in these sessions three times a week. Following the six-week period, the researchers assessed the subject's waist size, body mass index, subcutaneous fat mass, and percentage of total body fat.
Surprisingly, the EMS did have a significant impact on reducing waist circumference, abdominal obesity, subcutaneous fat mass, and body fat percentage without the participants changing their exercise or diet, which led the researchers to draw the following conclusion: "The use of the high-frequency current therapy may be beneficial for reducing the levels of abdominal obesity in young women."
Other studies have demonstrated the value of EMS in a variety of situations, including pain treatment and assisting in warming up muscles before performance-related activities.
